David Moyes claims that he was allocated £5 million per year to spend at Everton before signing a deal with Bill Kenwright.

The former Toffees manager added that his part of the agreement was that no players would be sold without his approval, and he was free to do whatever he pleased with his squad. He also confesses it was difficult to lose Paul Gascoigne and praised Wayne Rooney for his impact at Goodison Park.

Moyes told the Liverpool ECHO [19 September]: “When I was agreeing the deal, and it was actually in the Haydock

Thistle Hotel, when Bill and I shook hands, Bill says, ‘David, I’m able to give you £5 million a year to spend,’ and I said, ‘fine, but here’s my side of the deal, what I want.'”

“My half of the arrangement was that you don’t sell any players without my approval, which I can do

I can do everything I want with the players, including taking them to the greatest hotels and taking them away, and we agreed on that contract. So that was it.

“Paul (Gascoigne) was on his way out to Burnley, which was a nightmare for me. Gazza was set to join for Burnley, who were scheduled to play Preston on Sunday.

“I did not want Gazza to play for Burnley against Preston. I was saying, ‘I’ll have to keep Gazza here!’ They would have been furious with Preston if I had done it.

“Wayne was a tremendous player, so we don’t need to emphasize it too much because everyone knows it. However, I believe that handling any 16-year-old is quite challenging.

“I’ve got to mention that I recently had dinner with Wayne, and he told me some fantastic anecdotes that, if I were a manager now, I’d die to hear! I was quite fortunate, though, and I recall Walter Smith telling me, “David, you’re really lucky; there’s a boy in the academy who’s a really good player, a boy named Wayne Rooney.”

Everton fans will always fondly remember the memories from the David Moyes era

Moyes is warmly remembered at Goodison Park for his exceptional management, notably in developing young players such as Rooney.

The Scotsman saw the England legend’s talent early on, bringing him into the first team at the age of 16.

His method included both tactical deployment and a personal touch, so it’s no wonder that the two have remained good friends off the game.

Moyes gave the striker the freedom to express himself on the play while also delivering advice off it, which was critical to Rooney’s growth.

The manager’s impact at Goodison Park is also defined by his dedication to the club’s philosophy of nurturing young players and competing beyond the team’s financial resources.

Given what has happened over the last decade or so, supporters will undoubtedly be impressed by what he has accomplished despite the restraints.

In other Everton news, Kevin Thelwell is expected to make a decision on 21 September, with Sean Dyche facing the sack at Goodison Park.
