“Is Klay Thompson really gonna turn back the hands of time? Is he gonna be that guy that’s gonna consistently knock down shots? And then Luka,”

Perkins continued, “we saw last season when he got to the NBA Finals, some could argue that Luka somewhat ran out of gas.

He’s gonna put up the numbers because he’s gonna have the ball in his hands… but I’m looking at the Mavs, and no one is really fearing them right now…

I expect Minnesota to come out and be better, and I expect the Lakers and so forth to be better.”

After making it to the NBA Finals the previous season, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to perform better than ever.

Not surprisingly, most people have high expectations for the Mavs because they have an MVP-caliber player in Luka Doncic, a quality co-star in Kyrie Irving, and a new addition in Klay Thompson. Not everyone, though.

In an episode of ESPN’s “NBA Today,” the panel was asked to predict which team would falter the most during the season. The Mavericks fell to Kendrick Perkins, who was notorious for his poor passes.

Perkins’ entire argument is unconvincing. Thompson doesn’t have to go back in time; in the previous season, he made 38.7% of his three-pointers when Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic weren’t there to create open looks for him.

More than running out of gas during the playoffs, Doncic was battling injuries. Furthermore, the LA Lakers did not improve. That was included purely for clicks.

While the Minnesota Timberwolves largely remained unchanged, there was room for development internally, the Oklahoma City Thunder may have improved.

Should the Mavericks falter, it would be due to injuries. Even with Thompson starting in place of Derrick Jones Jr.,

The defense shouldn’t falter too much because P.J. Washington and the center tandem of Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively II are still there.

However, Doncic was limited towards the end of last year, Thompson is a few years removed from two serious injuries, and Irving hasn’t participated in more over 60 games since the 2018–19 campaign.

But injuries are primarily the result of luck, therefore it’s difficult to forecast a collapse because of them.
