“I would be embarrassed” – EFL expert issues damning Stoke City ownership verdict after Steven Schumacher decision
Following Steven Schumacher’s shocking dismissal, EFL analyst Ali Maxwell has criticized
the way Stoke City’s owners, the Coates Family, have managed the team in recent years.
Despite appearing to be safe in his position after garnering recognition for his ability
to maintain the Potters in the Championship the previous season,
Schumacher was let go by sports director Jon Walters on Monday morning after serving as manager for nine months.
The forty-year-old became the fifth Potters manager or head coach to be sacked in
the previous six years with his dismissal. He is just the latest in a long line of recent
Stoke bosses to be fired after only a short time on the job.
Surprisingly, it has been stated that Norwich City first-team coach
Narcis Pelach is the Potters’ first candidate to take over at the bet365 Stadium following his departure.
The Spaniard may assume leadership shortly as the team tries to move rapidly to appoint a new manager.
Concerned about Stoke City’s owners’ unpredictable behavior, an EFL expert
John Coates, who took over as chairman in 2006, became Stoke’s sole owner earlier this year.
Prior to 2020, he served as joint-chairman with his father Peter, who co-founded bet365.
Due to their astute business decisions, they have successfully managed the team off the field for
a period of years, avoiding several financial difficulties; nevertheless, on the field, has been a different story,
with the Potters stuck in the Championship wilderness since 2018.
In response to criticism that the Coatese and the previously mentioned
Walters were quick to fire Schumacher when the team appeared to be improving on the field,
Maxwell delivered a harsh assessment of the Coatese and Walters’ ownership
style in the most recent NTT20 podcast.
“I think it’s absurd that the Coates family is among the best owners in the nation when it comes to things
other than football,” Maxwell said.
“They have been the best ATM and bank machine available. 18 years and over £300 million (invested), possibly a good bit more.
When it was permitted, they sold the stadium to themselves in order to
beat FFP issues, they have consistently footed ridiculous bills with the club spending so much more than it earns.
“They wiped all the debts this summer when Stoke City Holdings Ltd was de-merged by bet365 and is now owned by the Coates’.
“It really amazes me that these businesspeople, who have handled the football division in the most astute manner,
are unable to focus on a single task for an extended period of time.
“It’s not just managers; everyone is concentrating on the names of people who have left or been demoted;
there have been numerous CEOs, technical directors, and sporting directors, among other senior management positions.
They appear to wish to grant them great authority. They gave directors a great deal of power,
just as they gave managers a great deal of power in the past, but they also have no problem
with firing any of them after a year if they aren’t winning football games.
It’s likely that Jonathan Walters will be fired before the next manager gets sacked,
if this appointment doesn’t work.
“They’ve got themselves in a situation now where they sacked Ricky Martin, then Alex Neil,
then Walters came in…I can’t remember which way round it goes, but you see my point.
“If Walters has the keys and he hires Chicho (Pelach), and then he is 13th in six months’ time,
do you sack Chicho or Walters?
“They’re not helping themselves, they’re literally continuously cutting their nose off to spite themselves and then, just as it grows back, they see if they can chop it off again.
“If I was a Stoke fan I would be exhausted, and I would be embarrassed.”
