Sean Dyche was once again down to bare bones in terms of fit players as three options were struck down with illness on the morning of the clash [EFC, 17 September].

Among those absent was Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has led the line in most games this season but, as he was unavailable, Beto was given his second start of the campaign.

However, after a catastrophic performance that resulted in him being hooked in the 62nd minute, the Portugal international will be lucky to start for Everton again.

The striker was one of Everton’s marquee signings last season but failed to live up to the standards expected of him. Despite playing 37 times last term, the 26-year-old only managed to bag five goals across all competitions. This season hasn’t been much better either with Beto making six appearances and only managing to score once during their game against Doncaster. The striker also ended the game with just 19 touches [Sofascore] and while 50 per cent of his shots were on target (one), his performance was well below-par.

Everton’s summer transfer window seemed fairly solid with the club targeting key areas within their squad that needed bolstering.

Armando Broja was arguably the most exciting of the lot and, although he’s currently sidelined due to injury, once fit, his inclusion in the team could make a massive difference to Everton’s fortunes.

Dyche will likely want Broja’s return to come as soon as possible, especially with the pressure mounting around his future [The Guardian, 17 September].
