Chris Foy, a former Premier League referee, has stated that Sunderland’s first-half penalty in their away loss to Plymouth Argyle on Saturday should not have been given.

Patrick Roberts’ spot kick, which was made after former Black Cat Bali Mumba was found to have taken down Chris Rigg within the Argyle box, gave Regis Le Bris‘ team the lead in the 24th minute. But in the second half, the home team rallied and took a 2-1 lead before Romaine Mundle’s late equalizer gave Sunderland’s travelling supporters hope. But soon after, Joe Edwards capitalized on a rebounded long-range attempt to secure all three points for Wayne Rooney’s team, putting an end to the match for the Pilgrims.

And according to Foy, Plymouth should never have been trailing in the first place. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former official suggested that the contact on Rigg which led to Roberts’ opener should not have been deemed enough to warrant a foul.

“The high threshold for penalizing contact and the fact that contact with obvious consequences is where the threshold for penalties is set was one of the major points of emphasis communicated prior to the season,” he stated. In this instance, the referee signals that Patrick Roberts has been given a penalty kick for being pushed as he approaches the penalty area by Bali Mumba of Plymouth Argyle.
