Sean Dyche must make the bold decision to ditch ‘irreplaceable’ Everton star vs Southampton after poor start
Sean Dyche must make the bold decision to ditch ‘irreplaceable’ Everton star vs Southampton after poor start
Everton’s dismal start to the new season cannot be attributed to a single individual.
Ashley Young shoulder a lot of the blame for their opening-day loss to Brighton and Hove Albion. Then, against Tottenham Hotspur, no one was at the races.
Sean Dyche was largely blamed for his lack of substitutes in their collapse against AFC Bournemouth, before many more guilty parties came into vision as they copied their miserable feat against Aston Villa too. The manager has to change something, naturally,
and tonight’s Carabao Cup game against Southampton represents the perfect chance to practise that against Premier League opposition without the pressure of it being an actual Premier League match. With that in mind, perhaps there’s one particularly bold call that he could make to try and shock a star man into action.
Sean Dyche must make bold call for Carabao Cup game vs Southampton
Normally, when the Toffees’ form is so bad, one or two of their better names may step up and pull them out of a rut.
Richarlison and Abdoulaye Doucoure have previously been the starters, with Jordan Pickford serving as a reliable goalkeeper throughout. However, when that consistency is gone, everything seems to fall apart.
With that in mind, perhaps Dyche could use a similar technique to Carlo Ancelotti’s, benching Pickford after a poor run to warn him that his position is not certain.
Joao Virginia or Asmir Begovic would be excellent stand-ins while the 30-year-old sits on the bench. Hopefully, it will give the incentive needed to help him rekindle the spark that has seen him win the club’s Player of the Season title three years in a row.
Jordan Pickford might need that kick to recapture Everton form
Despite a tough run of play, Pickford remains one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League.
Few goalkeepers are as skilled at pinging long balls as he is, thanks to a unique combination of shot-stopping ability and ball control.
This well-rounded stability has also helped him become a regular for the national squad, with journalist Phil Murphy once calling the former Sunderland player ‘irreplaceable’ for England.
That sentiment was reflected across Goodison Park, with Pickford playing an important role in a backline that held the second-most clean sheets and conceded the fourth-fewest goals in the Premier League.
A few high-profile errors, most notably allowing Heung-min Son to snag the ball off him as they were thrashed by Spurs, as well as an overall lack of confidence, have dragged his stock down.
Some rumors even imply that Dyche may sell Pickford if his form does not improve.
Perhaps a brief appearance on the sidelines to demonstrate that he is not untouchable would benefit everyone involved. This might start tonight.
