The gunners have a valuable clinical edge and play respectable, attractive football (hey, this is a Spurs blog, but until we accept that they are currently superior than us, we are fooling ourselves and we will never be able to go on).

Spurs are the antithesis of clinical and icy. It’s adventurous and free-spirited, even when it follows predetermined guidelines. When it functions, it’s entertaining to watch and enjoyable, but there is minimal room for error and no safety net.

Although I enjoy seeing Maddison, Bentancur, and Kulu weave patterns in midfield, Madders’ deeper, interchangeable role isn’t functioning because the foundations aren’t strong enough.

Something is missing, there’s a hole in it someplace. Where strength should be, there is weakness. In the midst of the park, no one is in charge and there is no authority. It is comparable up front.

I’m sure Solanke will flourish. In addition to adding a focus point, I admire how he stretches his body to get the ball to go toward the goal. That’s old school center forward play.

However, yesterday he was overwhelmed and outnumbered two to one. The fact that we have to play a center half up front for the final ten minutes in the hopeless hope of getting on the end of one of our misdirected crosses is a testament to our desperation.

The objective was to demonstrate how they leverage this advantage. It’s not always the case that Vicario is a weak corner, in my opinion. We left him exposed and defenseless the previous season.

We have players surrounding him now, and the new interpretation of the current legislation should also be beneficial.

They thus sent two players to press him while two of ours repelled them. In reality, though, this made things worse for him because it put a strong four-man barrier in his way.

Their soldiers were only interested in killing two of our men; they had no desire to approach him. Gabriel moved into that pocket, the ball was accurate but our marking was off, yet they took advantage of our defenders.

In the sullen silence of the ride home, among the explanations sought, one jumped out. It was not a strategy or Angeball match. We gained more than enough possession and weren’t often exposed at the back.

We weren’t horrible that day; we were just average, and average isn’t good enough. It’s not the fault of Angeball if we’re set up to cross the ball but manage to create hardly any good balls throughout the afternoon—that’s just bad football.

It’s not Angeball; it’s just bad football if we purchase a center forward and then allow him to fend for himself when these crosses come in or sail over his head like they did yesterday.

It feels as if the NLD is pivotal, a marker for progress. Given the hectic nature of these games, it’s likely an anomaly rather than the greatest indicator of the type and caliber of football we play all season long.

However, two inferences from yesterday’s game are unavoidable. One is that we are not good under pressure, and until we are, we will not succeed. The other is that their development is three years ahead of ours.

That also brings with it a resilience and sense of certainty that we have not yet acquired.
