Bennett’s departure has come completely out of the blue for the fans at Ibrox, and though he was not the most favourable character, he is just as big a fan as everyone else.
The role of chairman is hugely important and some may be worried by the Gers’ lack of eagerness to find a replacement [The Athletic], with Bill Leckie even suggesting another high-level collapse [Scottish Sun].
King stepped down from his role in March 2020 after five years at the club, and he may have been hoping for another chance at Ibrox. That does not look to be happening anytime soon, though.
The Gers need some positive news behind the scenes, especially when it seems all doom and gloom on the pitch for Philippe Clement’s side. The Light Blues are already five points adrift from Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, and with no Champions League football, a set of new ideas could be crucial.
King’s potential return to Ibrox has been greeted with a very mixed reaction, which is completely understandable, but the main wonder now is who will actually fill Bennett’s role.
The club were left high and dry by James Bisgrove’s surprise exit earlier this summer, with Bennett stepping into his role to steer the ship in the right direction, and it remains to be seen who is next to take on that task.
In other Rangers news, Gary Keown has backed the Gers to make an “outside” hire after John Bennett quits Ibrox.
