Klay Thompson’s Brutal Honesty About Title Hopes
After losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals the previous season, Klay Thompson will start a new chapter in his career this season by joining the team and helping to turn it into a championship-winning organization.
At the ‘Dirk Nowitzki Foundation Tennis Classic’ on Saturday, Thompson engaged the media in frank conversation about his motivation for joining the team and the title hopes he is carrying into the 2024–25 NBA season.
“I’m excited; it’s a whole new chapter of my career that has the potential to be really special. The team was so close last year—three wins away from a championship—so I know we have the ingredients for success.
We just have to stay together and build week by week.
I’m here early to get a sense of the city and the terrain because I know we can do something amazing. And I’m enjoying myself in the process.”
It has been extremely awesome. It inspires me to just walk around the town, meet new people, and hear how happy they are about the approaching season and how appreciative they are that I’m here.
I’m motivated even more to go out at the gym when I see how happy everyone is about Mavs basketball.
After a season in which he averaged 17.9 points, Klay is back. Thompson had a career low in scoring, but he was a very good shooter, averaging 38.7% from three on 9.0 tries a game.
He accomplished this while playing as Golden State’s No. 2 option against formidable defensive schemes designed to stifle his output.
Compared to Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Klay is a more unassuming offensive player in Dallas who most likely takes advantage of the players’ open catch-and-shoot opportunities.
We might witness Klay unleashed like never before if he can’t be content for the remainder of the season.
Thompson began by discussing the Dallas Mavericks’ incredible 2011 Championship victory, in which they defeated the Miami Heat in a series that will never be forgotten, the OKC Thunder, and the two-time defending champion Lakers.
Klay feels his play will be able to match the high standards set by the success of that championship run.
“I saw just an incredible group that persevered through a low seed and beat some incredibly talented teams, whether it was Kobe Lakers or KD’s Thunder and even the Heatles of Miami.”
“It was just a run that was so inspiring and it was cool to watch that and try and replicate that in the upcoming season.”
“I recently arrived in Dallas, and I want to keep in the back of my mind the reason I came here: to support the city’s efforts to succeed. Nothing compares to that experience, particularly for athletes.”
