Is this What the Cowboys Paid 250 Million For?

The majority of Cowboys supporters proclaimed their club the Super Bowl winners following their season-opening victory over Cleveland.

Their doors were simply pounded on by reality. The Super Bowl this year could still go to the Dallas Cowboys.

However, not by performing as they did in their 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, their home opener.

The Cowboys’ defense did not perform as expected; it was uncannily identical to their dismal performance against the Packers in January 2023.

That’s two home games in a row where the defense was completely outclassed in the first half. By the half, both games were pretty much over.

An offense that was unable to step up and at least attempt to keep the game within striking distance was another glaring similarity.

Not only was the offense unable to score against the Packers, but they also gave Green Bay 14 of their 27 first-half points. With thanks to two interceptions by Dak Prescott.

With two minutes remaining in the half, the second pick was returned for a touchdown and a 27-0 lead.

The game is over.

Prescott was able to get some points on Sunday, at least against the Saints. In addition to throwing an interception that was turned into a Saints touchdown, he only managed one touchdown.

While Derek Carr was leading the Saints to five first-half touchdowns and a 35-16 halftime lead, Prescott managed to score 16 first-half points, 12 of which came from Aubrey’s foot.

Dallas, like the Packers, had the ball to start the second half and had a chance to at least give the defense something to fight for.

But as happened in January, the first drive of the second half ended in another field goal from Aubrey, and that was the closest Dallas would get the rest of the way.

Not worth a quarter of a billion dollars, though.

Along with the money, that title carries expectations.

It is expected of him to do better, particularly when his defense is not playing well. It is anticipated that he would match his opponent touchdown for touchdown, going toe to toe.

That wasn’t Prescott’s behavior on Sunday. He seldom ever does it; the shootout versus Seattle last year was the exception rather than the rule.

Prescott is 46-of-71 for 472 yards through two games, or just 236 yards per game. In addition to two touchdown passes, he has two interceptions.

Two more scores for the Cowboys came on a run by Ezekiel Elliott and a 60-yard punt return by KaVontae Turpin.

The remaining points? eight field goals from Brandon Aubrey for a total of 24 points.

How many games were lost by Jason Garrett’s offensive when they were forced to settle for field goals because they were unable to punch the ball in?

Fairly or unfairly, Prescott’s new contract puts the onus of winning games on him, particularly when his defense struggles to get off the field.

Rather than throwing turnovers and settling for field goals, he should be throwing touchdowns.
