What I love about VAR since it was introduced in 2021 is that it was meant to clear up refereeing errors for the Celtic and football supporters in Scotland.

The new refereeing technology has been around for almost two years now and instead of offering clarity and transparency, VAR has caused more division and controversy.

Especially where Rangers and Celtic are concerned. And here’s the strange thing. After Celtic were awarded a penalty against Hearts for a handball yesterday, the VAR decision ironically highlighted a pattern of assistance the Ibrox got in their first game of the season at Tynecastle.

The 0-0 draw with Hearts meant that Rangers lost early ground in the title race but it could, and probably should, have been worse if a penalty had been awarded that was denied the Edinburgh club that day.

Celtic penalty brings back Hearts/Rangers memories

Let’s remind ourselves of the handball against Hearts that got Celtic awarded a penalty yesterday:

In all seriousness, both handballs are one and the same and had it not been for poor VAR and refereeing, Rangers would be six points behind us at this moment in time.

So whilst the Rangers fans bleat about refereeing in Scotland and how they somehow feel cheated, they do need to remember that poor officiating has saved them on more than one occasion since VAR’s introduction in October 2021.
