Rio Ferdinand believes that Danny Welbeck, who scored his sixth Premier League goal on Saturday against his former team, should never have been transferred by Manchester United.

At the Amex Stadium, Brighton defeated Manchester United 2-1, and the Brighton striker scored his 100th goal for the team. Harry Maguire’s decision not to take the chance of turning a low cross into his own goal was largely responsible for his most recent effort.

This allowed Kaoru Mitoma to hold possession at the far post and slip a return pass past Erik ten Hag’s defense.

Following his progression through the United youth and 142 first-team games, Louis van Gaal sold Welbeck in 2014.

Welbeck moved to Watford and Brighton after initially signing with Arsenal.

Ferdinand was all smiles when he spoke on TNT Sports about Welbeck.

“With Danny Welbeck, nothing surprises me,” he stated (via The Sun). He was a tremendous player, and I remember watching him as a small child at Manchester United.

“As a former academy player and someone who I believed had so much worth both as a player and around the place, I couldn’t believe it when United agreed to let him go.

“I believe that players who have faced him have more respect for him than some fans who may not fully understand how challenging it is to play against him. He’s also a fantastic professional.

Stat attack: With his first goal for Brighton, Welbeck has now scored five Premier League goals versus United; his only other goals coming from a victory against West Ham (6). As a result, he leads all former Premier League players in goals scored against United.
