A training session is abandoned due to an event that casts doubt on Carlos Alcaraz’s US Open.

At Flushing Meadows, Carlos Alcaraz is one of the favorites to win the US Open this year.

Prior to his opening match at the 2024 US Open the next week, Carlos Alcaraz had a serious injury scare. The Spaniard quickly ended his Saturday training session with Francisco Cerundolo due to a risky situation.

Having won the US Open as a teenager in 2022, Alcaraz is among the heavyweight contenders on the men’s side of the draw at Flushing Meadows. This is his first Grand Slam success.

His Cincinnati Masters first-round elimination earlier this month came from a shocking three-set loss to seasoned player Gael Monfils, making his preparation for the tournament less than ideal.

And Alcaraz’s condition seems to have gotten worse after rolling his ankle during a workout with world No. 29 Cerundolo. Alcaraz quickly left the session to speak with his staff, and the 21-year-old quickly vanished behind the scenes.

Whether Alcaraz can recuperate in time for his first-round match at the US Open against Li Tu, which is currently scheduled for Tuesday of next week, is still to be seen. Alcaraz is ranked third going into the competition, behind Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner.

Djokovic’s victory over Alcaraz at the Paris Olympics may give him a psychological edge over the Spaniard at the moment. Sinner, though, may be more ready than any of them because of his impressive tournament victory in Cincinnati, which has enhanced his hard-court credentials.

John McEnroe, a tennis icon, feels that Alcaraz may have made a mistake by heading directly to Cincinnati less than two weeks after his heartbreaking Olympic experience, especially in light of the US Open.

McEnroe said Eurosport, “Alcaraz is my favorite player to watch right now.” “He brings everything, as you know. People who are multi-talented appeal to me. Someone like him could never seem to be down and could always have a smile on his face.

It’s difficult to imagine that he wouldn’t become frustrated, particularly in a cognitively demanding sport like tennis. He definitely needs a lengthier sabbatical, in my opinion. Perhaps he was under some pressure, though, since Novak was 37 and not playing.

He probably would have been better off not playing at all, looking back. Winning this tournament will be a difficult ask for him, emotionally speaking, considering everything that has transpired.

What is the remaining amount in his tank? This could provide an opportunity for someone other than the three individuals we anticipate—the door is definitely open for a surprise.”
