Adam Virgo argues that transfer market shrewdies Matt O’Riley’s record-breaking move to the south coast has paid off for both Celtic and Brighton.

Virgo believes his two former clubs are among the best-run businesses in football, and the planned £30 million transfer for the Danish star demonstrates that. Celts plan to cash in on a player they paid MK Dons £1.5 million for in January 2022.

And Sky Sports commentator Virgo wouldn’t be surprised if Brighton’s earnings quadruple in a year if O’Riley makes the Premier League cut.

Opponent team supporters can argue that O’Riley isn’t worth the large sums of money Celtic has been requesting. However, Virgo maintains that the Parkhead board was correct to raise the criteria prior to reaching an agreement and that it is a reasonable fee for a 23-year-old. “This looks like a really great deal for all parties,”

Virgo said to Record Sport. Brighton could earn more money from the youngster or see him become a longer-term success at the club, but Celtic got a good deal for him.

“I completely understand the price tag. Brighton is absolutely not overpaying. He may be worth twice as much in a year. It’s the current market rate. If Matt even gets 10 Premier League goals from midfield, people will be sniffing about him for £50 million to £60 million.

“Celtic do not want to undervalue themselves. They believe that his contribution to their team is responsible for his success. They’ll dig their heels in and state how much they think he’s worth. Other clubs may disagree, but I believe Brighton appreciates it.

“They’ve had wide players contributing like Kaoru Mitoma, Solly March. But not hitting double figures. And never had that link from midfield to attack in central areas. They’ve lost Pascal Gross who was a big influence but he was more assisting goals.

“There are many parallels between Brighton and Celtic’s management styles. Brighton pays a great deal of attention to players, seeing something they can develop with playing time.

They’ve made the occasional mistake in the transfer market, but generally speaking, they manage their finances well. “More recently, they’ve gone slightly above fees paid in the past. Brajan Garuda from Mainz and, last summer, Carlos Baleba from Lille were around the £25 million plus mark.

However, they may feel they’re getting a BARGAIN here with Matt. Observe Alexis Mac Allister, Moses Caicedo, and Cucurella. They’ve done that repeatedly, and Matt could be another in that category,” the club says.

O’Riley scored 19 goals last season as Brendan Rodgers guided Celtic to the double. Virgo feels he might be the missing link in helping the Seagulls soar under new head coach Fabian Hurzeler. Virgo observed: “O’Riley has aims in his game. Brighton has most likely lacked a scoring central midfielder since joining the Premier League.

“They’ve had wide players contribute, like Kaoru Mitoma and Solly March. But not in double digits. And there was never a link between midfield and attack in central areas. They’ve lost Pascal Gross, who was a major influence but was more about assisting goals.

Virgo believes that playing for Celtic is the best chance for O’Riley to establish himself as a Premier League player during his prime. He’s preparing for numerous critics down south telling him that a high-priced signing from Scotland might not be enough.

But Virgo can see that O’Riley’s abilities will shine on a larger platform following a fantastic two-and-a-half years in the Parkhead winning machine.
