Conor Gallagher and Julián Álvarez Unveiled to Packed Metropolitano

Conor Gallagher, a former captain of Chelsea, made his debut on Wednesday night at Metropolitano Stadium in front of thousands of Atletico Madrid supporters.

Shortly after the £34 million transfer from Stamford Bridge was completed, the 24-year-old England player took to the pitch at his new residence.

As he strolled into the centre circle wearing his new No 4 shirt, Gallagher waved at his new followers, surrounded by motorcyclists and pyrotechnics as part of a spectacular ceremony.

Later, he thrilled a raucous gathering by saying ten words in Spanish.

‘Hola,’ said Gallagher. Not very good at Spanish. I’m really happy right now. AUPA ATLETI. That message basically translates to “Hello” in English. I’m not very good at Spanish. I am overjoyed. RISE UP, ATLETI.

Gallagher was one of four new players announced on Wednesday, following Atletico’s summer spending spree of almost £150 million.

Julian Alvarez, an Argentine striker who cost £64 million to acquire from Manchester City, was also included in the lineup.

The other new guys on show were Spain’s Robin Le Normand (£29 million from Real Sociedad) and Norway’s Alexander Sorloth (£27 million from Villarreal).

Last season, Atletico finished fourth in La Liga, which was the team’s lowest result since 2012.

During that time, they won the Spanish championship twice: in 2014 and 2021.

Monday’s 2-2 tie against Villarreal marked the start of Simeone’s team’s 2024–25 campaign. Alvarez, Sorloth, and Le Normand were all involved.

Now, on Sunday, they will play host to Girona, where Gallagher might make his debut.
