In the wake of his remarks that Jaylen Brown was the Celtics‘ best player during the NBA Finals, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd has provided an explanation.

Before the 2024 NBA Finals, Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd ignited the internet with his statement that Jaylen Brown is the Boston Celtics’ best player.

Although Jayson Tatum has long been regarded as the team’s best player, Kidd’s revelation about Brown sparked a lot of controversy.

Months after making those remarks, he thought back on them and declared that the results of the awards voting proved him correct.

“I believe he was performing at his best at the moment. Some thought I was attempting to initiate things. I’m not sure whether I was incorrect, though, considering he had recently won MVP of the Eastern Conference and the Finals MVP award.”

Kidd thinks the media overplayed his comment, taking it to mean he was trying to instigate a rivalry between Brown and Tatum when all he was trying to do was give Brown credit for playing the best basketball of his life.

But as everyone knows, there are occasions when the media misinterprets what I was saying to suggest that I was attempting to get Jayson and Jaylen to start dating. All I was saying was that Jaylen is playing really well.

Therefore, I wasn’t initiating anything. However, Jaylen was performing at his peak right now. Some people interpreted my remark as an attempt to start something, but that wasn’t my intention.”

The Tatum-Brown team has suffered a lot this summer even though they were nearly about to win an NBA Championship. Following the embarrassment of Brown depriving Tatum of two Playoff MVP awards, Tatum and two other Celtics players represented Team USA. Brown, on the other hand, was not chosen and openly questioned the choice.

Tatum received two DNPs, which further damaged his reputation as a star, so he wouldn’t be any better off playing for the Olympic squad. In order for the Celtics to win the NBA Championship again, both players will have a lot to prove the following season.

“You must pass via Boston. They are equipped to contend for another one, having won it the previous season. You have to defeat the reigning champions. That they are in the East pleases me.

There are a lot of talented teams this season, so it will be difficult, but hopefully we can see them again. Hopefully, we’re one of the teams that Boston can visit again if they make it there.”

Before then, Kidd will get an opportunity for retribution as the Mavs will host the first regular season encounter in 2025–25 on January 25 during NBA Rivals Week. The two clubs from different conferences will play each other in reverse on February 6, which also happens to be the day of the NBA Trade Deadline.
