Celtics Re-Sign Familiar Face to Exhibit 10 Contract

For a few weeks, there were rumors circulating about a possible reunion, but nothing was confirmed until recently. Writer Bobby Manning reports that wing Jay Scrubb has agreed to a contract worth Exhibit 10 with the Boston Celtics. Scrubb’s strong Summer League play last year won him a two-way deal with the Boston Celtics. Scrubb, however, missed the entire season due to an ACL injury and was eventually dismissed by the team. The 23-year-old stated in an interview with Manning that even though he was no longer formally on the roster, he still felt like he “was a part of the team.”

“I felt like I was a part of the team even if I wasn’t on the deal since I was there and the relationships I built and just being there, you still feel like you’re part of the organization,” Scrubb said. “That gave me the motivation to want to get back and be there with those guys … the mental part, being away from the game for the first time just crushed me, I didn’t really know how to feel, but having the support, it really takes over. That really brought me back … it’s tough physically, but the harder you work, the more you build yourself up to better yourself.”

After being selected by the Brooklyn Nets in the second round of the 2020 NBA Draft, Scrubb made his NBA debut. But in 2021, the native of Kentucky made his NBA debut with the Los Angeles Clippers. Scrubb spent two seasons playing for the team, starting 22 games. This includes one start against the Houston Rockets in May 2021, the team’s second-to-last regular season game. Scrubb finished the game with 17 points (6 of 16 shots), six rebounds, and three steals. In the 2022–23 season, the 6’5′′ wing also appeared in two games for the Orlando Magic.

The Boston Celtics Have One Open Spot on Their Roster

Scrubb was re-signed, but the Celtics still have a slot open on their roster. Almost all of the members of the team returned from last season’s championship team. Currently, only Oshae Brissett and Svi Mykhailiuk are not on the roster for next season. At this point in the offseason, it seems highly unlikely Mykhailiuk will return. As for Brissett, though a return is still an option, it seems like his time in Boston will likely end.

Brissett discussed his free agency in a recent video posted on his YouTube channel, BrissyTV (YouTube link), thereby indicating that his time with the Celtics is probably coming to an end. Brissett clarified that the possibility of a return is “not closed fully,” though.

“I enjoy basketball, and I want to do my job.” I’m eager to participate in games. That’s basically it. As you may know, I’m currently in talks with a few teams as a free agent. Naturally, you’ll all be able to witness my final destination when it occurs. However, that’s complete transparency, dude. Well, that’s what everything boils down to, ultimately. I cherished every aspect of being a Boston Celtic. You know, I could always go back. Really, who knows? The

door is not closed fully. It’s like, it’s like right there, but it’s not closed fully.”

Whether the Celtics use that final roster spot before the start of next season or not remains unknown. However, Brissett remains a name to monitor for that spot as the offseason continues.
