Foxes are hoping to add a new striker this summer.

With Kelechi Iheanacho‘s contract expiring and Tom Cannon likely going on loan,

37-year-old Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka could be the only striker choices.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that the club is reportedly interested in Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite,

who recently scored 22 goals to help the club return to La Liga.

The 33-year-old had a release clause of only £500,000, which enticed Leicester, but he is now free after triggering a clause in his contract.

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, the forward has ‘chosen to make advantage of the clause’ that allows him to leave his contract with Espanyol on July 15th.

The report also acknowledges Leicester’s persistent interest and claims Braithwaite is ‘in contact’ with the club.

Luis Suarez stated that Braithwaite was at a ‘high level’ at Barcelona.

Braithwaite has had an unusual career.

Despite never being particularly prolific, including a stint at Middlesbrough where he scored nine goals in 40 appearances,

the Denmark international found himself at the focus of a contentious transfer to Barcelona in 2020.

The move sparked a lot of controversy because it was allowed to take place outside of the transfer market as a

’emergency transfer’ in response to Ousmane Dembele‘s season-ending injury.

Braithwaite was having a fantastic season with Leganes,

who had no choice but to accept to the £15 million deal and finished the season relegated without their key striker.

When Braithwaite arrived at the Camp Nou, iconic Uruguay striker Luis Suarez praised him, stating,

“Martin is going to surprise people.” He is at an excellent level.

“He was Leganes’ finest player, and with the guys around him at Barcelona, he can fulfil his potential.

“Bringing in players is beneficial since it increases competition and forces you to battle harder for your position.

Competition is healthy and beneficial to the team.”

While Braithwaite may not be the exciting signing Leicester fans hoped for when they returned to the Premier League,

he might be a good addition to Cooper’s striker options and will have a minimum impact on the transfer budget.
