Dallas Mavericks forced into tough position with final roster spot

The Dallas Mavericks lost their opening game of the

NBA Summer League against the Utah Jazz last weekend.

The league is officially started. With the development of Olivier-Maxence

Prosper and second-round pick Melvin Ajinca, there are many intriguing storylines to follow.

Some of these players may end up on the final roster for the regular season if they have strong performances.

Dallas currently has two available two-way positions and one open spot on the 15-man roster. Choosing a player to occupy these spots will undoubtedly be difficult.

Rumor has it that the Mavs intend to use this roster position to enhance their backcourt, but one beloved veteran appears certain he’ll be re-signing with the team this summer.

Mavericks’ choice about the final roster place may have offended certain people.

Markieff Morris is certain that he will sign a new contract with the Mavericks this summer, and there have been rumors that the team also wishes to retain him.

The Mavs are now forced to choose someone to sign with the final place, which puts them in a difficult situation. Which should they do first: sign a backup guard, give it to Ajinca, or bring Morris back?

It won’t be simple for the Mavs to choose who gets this place, but they have a few possibilities. Morris’s re-signal would deprive them of a third seasoned creator. They wouldn’t have one of the best backup point guards if they signed one.

Because AJ Lawson’s contract is non-guaranteed, Dallas might elect to waive him in order to re-sign Morris and sign a backup guard. However, doing so would essentially mean giving up on Lawson’s growth and losing his team-friendly contract.
With so many choices to make, the Mavericks may be able to push Nico Harrison to give Ajinca a roster place if he has a strong Summer League campaign. The Mavs are probably holding off on making a decision about what to do with this last roster place until after Summer League, just to see how things work out.

The Mavs have an opportunity to improve with this acquisition, regardless of the player they sign.
