Emmerson Boyce, an ex-Luton defender, has been appointed as the inaugural manager of Wigan Athletic Women.

The 44-year-old, who came through the ranks at Kenilworth Road and went on to play 212 games for Town, scoring nine goals, moved to Crystal Palace in July 2004, before joining Wigan for £1 million in 2006. He remained with the Latics for nine years,

becoming the club’s all-time Premier League appearance record holder and captaining Athletic to a stunning FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

Boyce retired from football in July 2016 after a brief spell with Blackpool. He has since held prominent roles in his native Barbados, where he won 12 caps, as technical director and head of the Barbados Female Football Development Programme for the Barbados Football Association, where he will play an important role in developing the women’s national team from 2020 to 2024.

The UEFA-licensed coach has now returned to the Latics to take over the first official club-affiliated Wigan Athletic Women’s squad, which will be founded for the 2024-25 season. Boyce told the club’s official website that his appointment is exciting and that he is thrilled to be back.

When I learned about the possibility, I was eager to participate. We want to ensure that the town is proud of its female squad.

“There will be a strong sense of community, and the town is in for an exciting moment. Personally, I have a terrific history here and would like to share my experiences with the players and coaching staff. We’re on this path together, and we want to make progress.”

Hayley Sherratt, Wigan Athletic’s head of women’s operations, added: “We are happy that Emmerson has been appointed as the inaugural manager of Wigan Athletic Women, and we believe he is the ideal candidate given his coaching experience in Barbados and past links with the football club.

“We got a great quality of applicants for the post, and Emmerson’s excitement, knowledge, and strong desire to be a part of this historic project shone through the entire process.

Emmerson is a manager who wants to play an entertaining type of game and will work tirelessly every day to make our women’s team a success on and off the field.”
