After three seasons of managerial instability in 2023–24, during which Tony Mowbray, Michael Beale,

and Mike Dodds all assumed control of Sunderland, the Black Cats have formally ushered in a new era under the

tutelage of a former France youth international in Le Bris.

After establishing a reputation during a two-season stint at Lorient, where he led the team to a 10th-place finish in

the 2022–2023 Ligue 1 season prior to last year’s devastating relegation to the second division, the 48-year-old was

signed to a three-year contract this summer.

Le Bris, 48, was “honoured” to have been selected by the Stadium of Light administration despite not initially being

thought of as Sunderland’s first-choice Ligue 1 managerial candidate. Prior to Will Still choosing to take charge of

Lens, the Black Cats were strongly linked with the former Reims manager.

Le Bris takes over Sunderland, a team that finished the 2023–24 Championship campaign in a poor 16th place,

a sharp drop from their 2022–23 run to the playoffs, as their final three games ended in losses without a single goal

being scored.

With less than a month until the start of the new second-tier season, Sunderland has also scheduled friendlies

against Nottingham Forest, Eldense, Blackpool, and Bradford City. On August 10, they will play their Championship

opener against Cardiff City.

Elliott Dickman, the manager of South Shields, will have an emotional reunion with Sunderland during their visit.

Dickman spent more than 20 years managing the Black Cats’ Under-18 and Under-23 teams from 1995 until 2021,

when he left for fierce rivals Newcastle United.

After leading the South Shields academy squad for a short time in 2023, Dickman left his position as the Magpies’

Under-23 head coach to take charge of the main team permanently in April after a successful tenure as an interim

manager.
