This summer, Leeds United let four players to go on loan, and one of those players scored on his new team’s debut—albeit in a preseason match.

Jack Harrison has taken advantage of a clause in his contract that permits him to go out on loan one more, having done so to the Merseyside team last summer, to return to Everton on loan for a second season.

Sam Greenwood surprised everyone by leaving Leeds to sign with Preston after making an impact at Luke Ayling’s Middlesbrough the previous season. The adaptable star will be looking to lead a Preston team that is vying for a top six spot.

Wayne Rooney has greeted Darko Gyabi back to Plymouth after the £5 million midfielder spent the second part of the previous campaign on loan at Home Park. He’ll be eager to showcase his abilities at last.

Sonny Perkins scores for his boyhood team, Leyton Orient, in his debut.

Sonny Perkins moved to Elland Road in 2022 after leaving Leyton Orient at the age of 14. He then joined West Ham. Perkins only played in four senior games, but he did manage a goal against Cardiff City in the FA Cup.

Even though he did score, he struggled during his brief stint on loan at Oxford United last season, appearing in just six games. Instead of signing a fresh loan, it saw him return to Leeds in January, where he could only play for the Leeds U21 team.

He has since returned to League One’s Leyton Orient, where he scored for Richie Wellens’ team in their opening summer preseason match on Tuesday. The other, in a 7-0 victory over an unleague team Hornchurch.

Leeds talent Perkins might be developed on loan at Leyton Orient.

Versatile attacker Perkins needed a career boost this summer after struggling to obtain playing time at Leeds and having a bad loan at Oxford; returning to a team he knows and loves might well be the answer.

Perkins has previously expressed how happy he is to be back at Orient, and his excellent start—albeit in a friendly against weaker opponents—will give him confidence for the remainder of the preseason and 2024–2025.

Declan Rice is a huge fan of Perkins, and over the course of the next 12 months, Leeds supporters may finally realize what a gifted player they have in Perkins. But while Perkins is on loan, it’s make or break.
