After a move was described as a “done deal” by a transfer insider, Southampton is poised to make another addition this summer.

Saints recruiting for Premier League return

Russell Martin, who defeated Leeds United in the Championship play-off final to return to the Premier League,

is eager to bolster his team’s calibre. Taylor Harwood-Bellis has already been confirmed as a permanent addition,

following his standout season on loan with the Saints in 2023–2024.

They have added Premier League experience in addition to the former Manchester City player,

thanks to the expertise of senior players Charlie Taylor and Adam Lallana, who between them have played in almost 400 top flight games.

However, rumours regarding a few of the Saints team’s talents persist.

This summer, they lost striker Che Adams on a free transfer, and more players may still leave.

The latest player to be linked to leaving the team this summer is the excellent defender Kyle Walker-Peters.

West Ham United is reportedly interested in Flynn Downes, who may return to St Mary’s through a swap deal after spending last season on loan.

Martin and company seem to be ready for just that scenario, as a new full-back is expected to arrive on the south coast shortly.

Southampton set to sign new full back

Yukinari Sugawara, a 24-year-old defender, is about to join Southampton’s roster as another addition.

The effort to bring the defender to St Mary’s is now a “deal done,” according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano,

with Southampton expected to pay roughly 7 million euros (£5.9 million) in total for the Japan international.

It is also reported that Sugawara had a medical on Wednesday in preparation for finalising his transfer to the new boys of the Premier League.

The 24-year-old, who is valued at 12 million euros by transfer portal Transfermarkt,

is probably available for less because he is about to enter the last 12 months of his £3k-per-week deal with AZ.

He is still a top-tier player, though. He is the most stylistically similar U23 player to Trent Alexander-Arnold from the previous campaign,

according to data site Statsbomb, but he will need to get off to a quick start if he hopes to have the

same effect on the south coast as the England defender had on Merseyside.

After international colleague Daichi Kamada joined Crystal Palace earlier in the summer,

he will become the fifteenth player from Japan to play in the Premier League.

He will also be the sixth player from the Japanese team (Mitoma, Tomiyasu, Kamada, Endo, Hashioka)

to compete in the Premier League of England the following season.
