Liverpool is in the hunt to sign Teun Koopmeiners, and Atalanta’s move for one of Celtic’s great players may hold the key to his transfer.

Atalanta have made a move to recruit Celtic player Matt O’Riley, which could allow Liverpool to make an offer for Dutch international midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano claims that the Europa League champions have made a formal offer to sign the Danish international from last season’s Scottish Premiership winners, despite opposition from a number of Premier League clubs.

Negotiations are still underway, as the Italian club seeks to complete a deal for the 23-year-old, who scored 19 goals and assisted 18 times in all competitions for Celtic last seasons

Negotiations are still underway, as the Italian club seeks to complete a deal for the 23-year-old, who scored 19 goals and assisted 18 times in all competitions for Celtic last season.

If they are successful in their bid, Atalanta will be able to move on Koopmeiners, who is garnering interest from both Liverpool and Juventus.

The 26-year-old, who can play anywhere in attacking midfield, scored 15 goals in all competitions last season and was a major member of the Atalanta team that defeated Liverpool to win the Europa League.

Injury kept him out of the Netherlands squad for this summer’s EURO 2024, but he is anticipated to be fine for the new season. He has decided he wants a fresh challenge, and Atalanta is reportedly demanding a £55 million fee for a player they signed for about £10 million from AZ Alkmaar three years ago.

According to reports in Italy over the weekend, Liverpool are the frontrunners for his signature, and having played for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot in Alkmaar, he might play an important role in the Reds’ rebuilding this season.

However, he is the top target of new Juventus boss Thiago Motta, and Liverpool may need to act quickly to beat the Italian giants to his signature.
