Scott Wright closes in on Rangers exit as new Sheffield Wednesday transfer update emerges

According to The Fourth Official, Scott Wright’s departure from Rangers and move to Sheffield Wednesday is nearing completion and may be confirmed within hours.

The outlet said on its YouTube channel (4 July) that the winger for whom the Light Blues are open to offers this summer is closing in on a move to Hillsborough as talks between all parties continue.

Wright has only a year left on his Glasgow contract, but the Owls have sought him during the summer window, with sources claiming that manager Danny Rohl admires the Scottish winger [Daily Record, 29 June].

Speaking on YouTube, the Fourth Official stated, “My understanding is that, that is a deal close to completion, and that may well be completed over the next 48 hours or so.”

Will Scott Wright exit Rangers amid Sheffield Wednesday transfer links?

Wright’s departure from Rangers had been expected for some time, as Philippe Clement made it clear during his first season in Glasgow that he did not believe the Scotsman had what it required to be a regular starter in the biggest games.

The Belgian was not hesitant to leave the winger out on numerous occasions last season, notably in crucial games where he was frequently relegated to the bench or nowhere near the matchday squad, indicating his future.

Some may argue that he still has something to give in a Rangers shirt, but with Oscar Cortes’ loan in Glasgow prolonged and more fresh signings due in the coming weeks, his minutes will be severely constrained.

By selling him now, the Gers have the option to cash in on his skills (even if for a little fee) rather than allowing him to walk away for free at the conclusion of next season when his contract expires.

The Light Blues should be commended for learning from their past mistakes under previous management. However, new obstacles have emerged for the Gers following an update on Ibrox’s redevelopment this summer.
