Phil Foden of England remarked that the players should share part of the guilt for the team’s unsteady performances at Euro 2024, offering condolences to manager Gareth Southgate, who has come under intense criticism.

Harry Kane’s header in extra time against Slovakia and Jude Bellingham’s last-minute bicycle kick helped England salvage the tournament after they struggled through their four games in Germany.

The 24-year-old expressed sympathy for Southgate when asked about the criticism the coach has received, especially over the team’s propensity to back off rather than exert pressure.

“Part of the blame has to go to the players,” Foden stated.

“Some leaders need to get together and figure out why it’s not functioning. The manager is only capable of so much. He instructs you on how to press after setting you up in a system. You must figure something out if things aren’t going that way.

The Premier League’s Player of the Season, Foden, admitted to having difficulties in Germany. He remarked, “I haven’t been the Premier League’s best player to come here and not show it.”

On Saturday, England plays Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
