In an uncertain situation, Southampton took the initiative to attempt and sign

the player Russell Martin desired last summer.

With Charlie Taylor’s free agent acquisition and the

official confirmation of Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ permanent transfer

on Monday, Southampton is beginning to bolster its roster

in preparation for a Premier League comeback.

Adam Lallana, 36, has also joined as manager Russell Martin attempts

to bolster his comparatively inexperienced team with top flight experience.

After missing out on a player with 90 Premier League games last summer,

the Saints have now made an initial bid for the player.

Due to strong rumors linking Kyle Walker-Peters to West Ham United,

Southampton may lose one of its top players.

Walker-Peters has one year left on his present deal,

therefore he might be used as a makeweight to

get Flynn Downes of West Ham back to the south coast; the midfielder is still West Ham’s top priority this summer.

Walker-Peters is in his final year of contract, and Southampton won’t want to take the chance of having him spend the summer in the same situation as they did this offseason with Che Adams.

As a result, the team is moving quickly to find a successor for the twice-capped England international. According to Sky Sports, an approach has been made for Max Aarons, a right defender for Bournemouth.

“Southampton has approached Bournemouth for talks over a deal for Max Aarons,” according to Sky Sports, which also notes that “the Saints want to sign Aarons as their new right-back amid uncertainty over Kyle Walker-Peters’ future.”

The report attributes interest in Walker-Peters to both Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur, in addition to West Ham.

Last summer, Martin was eager to sign Aarons since many believed Walker-Peters would depart St. Mary’s after being demoted to the Championship.

Nevertheless, Walker-Peters stayed at Southampton and was instrumental in the team’s promotion-winning campaign, while the club instead sold Tino Livramento to Newcastle United.

Instead, Aarons signed a £12 million contract to leave Norwich City for Bournemouth. He played in 20 Premier League games the previous season before losing favor toward the end of the game.

Martin might benefit from the 24-year-old falling in the hierarchy, and Norwich boss David Wagner was all over him prior to his departure in the summer.

“Max is a very, very good player, and he’s a very, very good character as well,” Wagner added in reference to Aarons.

“Everyone is aware of our great regard for him both as a player and a person. He has been nothing but the best.

If Walker-Peters decides to leave this summer, Aarons, an attack-minded full-back who enjoys rushing down the right side of the pitch, could show to be a very capable replacement.
