With the Golden State Warriors, the Splash Bros era is finally ended.

Following several days of conjecture on Klay Thompson’s potential

departure from the team via free agency, Adrian Wojnarowski revealed

that the future Hall of Famer is en route to the Dallas Mavericks for

a $50 million, three-year contract. In addition, Woj mentioned that

Thompson is coming to the Mavs as part of

a sign-and-trade deal with the Charlotte Hornets.

The hitch is that there’s still work to be done on that front,

as Chris Haynes reports that the Mavs and Warriors are

still hammering out the specifics of this agreement.

Since joining the Warriors with the 11th overall choice in

the 2011 NBA Draft, Thompson has played his whole professional career there.

He has played a significant role in each of the four teams that have

gone on to win an NBA championship. The fact that Thompson

and Golden State’s front office were unable to come to an agreement on

an extension in the months before free agency opened was much discussed.

In the weeks before the new league year began, rumors started to surface

that Thompson was seriously thinking about leaving the Warriors

because his relationship with them was no longer salvable.

The Mavericks joined both Los Angeles teams as prospective suitors,

and the Lakers, in particular, were heavily linked to Thompson

because LeBron James was reportedly willing to take a pay cut if it

helped bring him on board. Prior to free agency, it was reported

that the Warriors were getting ready to lose Thompson.

Even though Thompson is starting to feel the effects of age and injuries,

he is still a very excellent shooter who can compete on

the defensive end of the court. With a league-best 92.7 percent

shooting percentage from the free throw line and a 38.7 percent

three-point shooting percentage,

Thompson averaged 17.9 points in 29.7 minutes per game.
