Kieran McKenna would not want to lose the tight-knit nature of his Ipswich Town group as they make the step up to the Premier League, with players like Conor Chaplin and others having been with the club since their League One days and now on the verge of playing top-flight football. Yet, the step-up in quality will see the Tractor Boys manager wrestle with wanting to add quality to his starting line-up too, at the expense of some stalwarts in Suffolk.

For example, if this reported deal goes through this transfer window, the ex-Manchester United face-turned-beloved Ipswich manager may have to give up Sam Morsy’s guaranteed berth in his starting XI, which may be a controversial decision.

According to football journalist Jack Rosser’s social media posts last week, Ipswich have emerged as a surprise party interested in Flynn Downes’ services, perhaps swooping in to grab him away from Southampton.

The South Coast club will be eager to recruit him on a permanent basis this summer, following a successful loan spell in the Championship that saw him become a firm fan favourite.

Downes would taste promotion with the Saints during his season-long loan move from West Ham United, with Rosser claiming that the Hammers want roughly £15 million to contemplate selling the 25-year-old this summer. If Russell Martin’s men are unwilling to invest the cash and acquire Downes on a permanent basis, the Tractor Boys might test the waters at the London Stadium, with the newly promoted side already flexing their transfer muscle by signing Omari Hutchinson for a club record fee.
