This summer, there will likely be a significant turnover in

Newcastle United’s goalkeeping staff, with Odysseas Vlachodimos‘ impending arrival serving as the first of many additions and subtractions.

It was revealed this morning that Vlachodimos will have a physical on Tyneside later today,

following the impending sales of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35 million

and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £33 million, in order to make sure we have conformed with the Premier League’s PSR regulations.

The 30-year-old, who completed a £7.7 million move from Benfica to the City Ground in September,

will cost us an amount that is yet unknown, but he will replace Loris Karius as of right now, as the German’s contract has officially ended

. In the background, talks are still ongoing despite Burnley’s £20 million demands for James Trafford,

who is expected to replace Martin Dubravka, who is set to depart after Euro 2024, and serve as Nick Pope’s long-term backup.

Given that Vlachodimos was playing for Benfica in a Champions League quarterfinal as recently as April,

some have speculated that he won’t be content to play third choice. He has,

however, mostly lagged behind USA stopper Matt Turner and former Mag Matz Sels at Nottingham, where he has

only made five Premier League appearances this season.

Although he is comparable in age to Karius (31) and has experience playing backup in England,

he is good with his feet and provides top-tier experience.

However, over the past 12 months, his career has somewhat stagnated,

and he was left off of Forest’s roster for their final 14 2023–24 games.

That is not the person we have chosen to sign as Pope’s immediate deputy despite our previous strong ties to Trafford,

Mamardashvili, and Ramsdale; rather, that is the makings of Karius’ replacement.

Eddie Howe is likely to stick with his four goalkeeper lineup from the previous season—Petruccio, Dubravka, Karius,

and Gillespie—for 2024–2025. A young goalkeeper is anticipated to join Vlachodimos in the coming weeks.

Burnley turned down our initial offer of £16 million for Trafford,

demanding at least £20 million due to the 20% sell-on option that was included to his transfer from Manchester City in the summer.

The fact that negotiations are still ongoing is encouraging,

and if Newcastle doesn’t back down on the price and goes back to Mamardashvili after his incredible performances at the Euros, an agreement will probably be struck.

Regarding Dubravka, he is aware that his time on Tyneside is coming to an end as he takes against England tonight in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals.

His contract expires in the summer, and several European teams, including Celtic, have expressed interest in signing him. He wants to play football for the first squad.
