With The 49ers having to sell for financial reasons, Archie Gray was expected to finish his move from Leeds United to Brentford,

but Graham Smyth and Fabrizio Romano add a fresh wrinkle.

On Saturday night, there were rumors that Leeds was about to cash in on Gray in response to a £40 million approach from Brentford.

The primary factors influencing the club’s decision to approve Gray’s offer were profit and sustainability.

Clubs must submit their financial reports by June 30. According to reports,

Leeds had to sell a high-profile player and generate some revenue to meet the requirements and stay clear of a point deduction this month

Ben Jacobs claimed that Leeds had told Gray that the club needed to sell him in order to achieve these requirements.

That is despite Gray’s desire to remain where he is and the backlash from fans.

However, Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post now offers a startling update, which Romano then repeats:

Going to Brentford appeared to be a formality.

The England U21 player Gray is scheduled to get a medical examination at Brentford on Saturday night,

and Smyth himself announced this information on Saturday night.

The Premier League clubs might try to take advantage of this move,

thus the Bees wanted a speedy medical exam. Aston Villa, West Ham, Tottenham, Chelsea, and Liverpool are all monitoring a possible Brentord deal.

However, Smyth now claims that Leeds has turned down Brentford’s £40 million offer.

It is surprising because, according to rumors, the club had given Gray permission to communicate and visit Brentford prior to an impending transfer.

“Leeds United has officially rejected Brentford’s offer for Archie Gray,” he said on X.

Then, on X, Fabrizio Romano stated, “Leiced United has rejected Brentford’s formal proposal for Archie Gray,

despite permission for medical and preliminary testing.”

“Brentford wanted to complete the deal following a verbal agreement, but the deal is currently off.

What is happening?

Gray has agreed to personal terms and is reportedly done with his physical before leaving Leeds this evening,

but he is currently in a precarious situation.

Is it really necessary for Leeds to sell before July 1st in order to meet the regulations?

Or was it just that the 49ers underestimated the opposition from Leeds supporters and decided that £40 million was a reasonable price for Gray?

The latter is more likely, as demonstrated by the club’s previous attempt to alter a badge.

Perhaps the club has altered its mind because of the outraged response from the supporters.
