DONE DEAL: Newcastle United has finally accepted Liverpool’s bid for Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool turned down the opportunity to acquire Anthony Gordon,

a winger for Newcastle United and England, in a trade that would have brought center back Jarell Quansah to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle contacted the Merseyside club with the suggestion,

but the club stated they had no intention of letting their young defender go after he established himself as an essential element of the first team roster.

The Anfield recruitment team holds great admiration for Gordon,

a lifelong Liverpool fan who signed a £45 million agreement to join Newcastle from neighbors Everton in January 2023.

They wouldn’t, however, have been willing to forfeit the 21-year-old England international Quansah in order to pull off what would have been this window’s first unexpected deal.

Liverpool didn’t submit a counter proposal.

Newcastle has a tight financial deadline on Sunday night,

thus their willingness to consider selling Gordon highlights their desperate attempt to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Since the end of the previous season,

several of Eddie Howe’s most valuable possessions have been connected to high-profile transactions.

Gordon and star striker Alexander Isak,

who is being courted by Chelsea,

are obviously not something that Howe wants to lose,

but financial rather than sporting considerations are driving this decision.

Gordon’s absence from the England squad during their preparation for Sunday’s round of 16 Euro 2024 match against Slovakia would have necessitated last-minute, hectic discussions and a medical examination at the national team’s training base.

Although the circumstances and timing of the negotiations between the clubs were uncommon,

Liverpool is probably one of the few rival Premier League clubs whose possible interest would have been welcomed with joy by the 23-year-old winger.

Liverpool values Gordon, so while a more appealing offer might have prolonged talks,

doing so now would have resulted in an overabundance of wide players who would have competed for a spot in Arne Slot’s starting lineup for the next year.

Under Jurgen Klopp, Luis Diaz was the obvious pick on the left since he is a fan favorite.

In the past six months, he has been connected to a number of foreign teams,

but neither he nor his representatives have made any public comments indicating that they are considering his departure.

With two years remaining on his Anfield deal,

Diaz would need to get a tremendous offer from Liverpool in order to move on from a player who cost £50 million in 2022 and is currently worth much more.
