Celtic plan to accept Matt O’Riley offer – sources
If a deal of £35 million is made this summer for 23-year-old Matt O’Riley, Celtic will accept it, sources have told Football Insider.
On Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast,
journalist and Scottish specialist Daniel Bowers said that
Brendan Rodgers “doesn’t get a say” if the club receives a sizable bid.
While there is “disappointment”
among Celtic Park supporters should the midfield player leave,
it is also acknowledged that Celtic would need to accept a substantial offer.
The Scottish transfer record would be broken
by £10 million with a fee of £35 million,
demonstrating the impact O’Riley had in the previous
season and the attention he has continued to receive.
Kieran Trippier’s summer 2019 transfer to Arsenal set a record of £25 million.
Selling O’Riley to Celtic would be a devastating blow to the team.
Given his strong play from the previous season,
a sale for the central midfielder might be unavoidable,
although his departure would have a big effect on the team.
Last season, the Danish international made 37 appearances in the Scottish Premier League, scoring 18 goals and dishing out 13 assists.
In addition to playing a major role in the Hoops’ Scottish Premiership victory, he excelled in the Champions League, contributing three assists in the European competition.
