The Star was the first to report that Golden State won’t let Wiggins play for his country, fearing an injury could diminish his trade value.

Canada’s Andrew Wiggins will not compete in the Olympics in Paris.

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly looking to trade the veteran guard, but they won’t him Wiggins play for his

nation out of concern that an injury will make him less valuable in the NBA.

When the Warriors eventually made their wishes known, Wiggins was ready to leave for Toronto on Friday in order

to attend the commencement of Team Canada’s training camp on Saturday.

Later on Friday, Rowan Barrett, general manager of Canada, verified the Star’s allegation that Wiggins would not be

in camp. Barrett claimed the Warriors were preventing Wiggins from competing.

“Andrew was good for us,” Barrett said to the media. “We have been in constant communication with him; he has

been preparing for this for weeks on end.

A day or two prior to camp, I received a call from Golden State informing me that they were keeping him out.

As the only Canadian participating in an Olympic Games since 2000, Wiggins was expected to be a sure thing,

joining an elite group that also included Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Andrew Nembhard,

and Dillon Brooks.

It is a setback to a Canadian team that is still very strong and is considered a medal contender in the 12-nation

Olympic competition.

Wiggins is viewed as a crucial trade piece for the Warriors, who are rebuilding their roster.

Wiggins competed for Canada at Olympic qualifying events in 2015 and 2020.

With three years remaining on his deal worth over $86 million (U.S.), the 29-year-old former first overall choice in

the NBA draft still has a contract with Golden State.

Barrett expressed her disappointment for him. “He has experienced a great deal over the past few years, and it goes

without saying that his mother was an Olympian. He is striving toward this goal and feels as though everything has

been an uphill battle.

“We had a nice talk, and he seems to be trying to kind of push the guys down the track, hoping for the best for the

guys.”
