Report: Warriors prioritizing PG13 trade over re-signing Klay

The Warriors are attempting to cook, so buckle up because things could get messy quickly.

Klay Thompson, a 13-year club veteran, and the Warriors are reportedly closer than ever in their chase of star Los

Angeles Clippers wing Paul George, which is negatively impacting the team’s tense relationship.

NBA insider Marc Stein stated in a piece that was released on Friday that “Golden State has this week prioritized the

trade pursuit of the LA Clippers’ Paul George above all other business.” But after months of sporadic and now rare

communication between the parties, that has only made things more tense between Thompson and the club.

“If Klay Thompson is ready to leave the Golden State Warriors in free agency, it will take some time for many NBA

fans to get used to the idea of him in a different uniform. However, to be honest, there have never been more

indications of it.

It should come as no surprise that Golden State prefers George to Thompson. Nine-time NBA All-Star George has

long been a perfect fit for the Warriors’ sharpshooting style, which is based on perimeter skill. Since both teams’

windows for contending for titles are closing concurrently, they might really benefit from one another.

It’s worrisome, though, that the Warriors are allegedly leaving four-time NBA Champion Thompson in the rearview

mirror in case someone else emerges.

George’s recruitment by Golden State is not assured. The 34-year-old is only available to the Warriors through a

sign-and-trade agreement, and he is requesting a four-year max contract. In addition to giving up on Thompson,

the aging Warriors would perhaps ship out some of its young, talented players in favor of more experienced players.

In an article that was published on Friday, Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic said, “The Warriors have

left the future of a franchise legend off to the side and increased the risk of losing him while they examine the

feasibility of the George situation and explore the rest of their options around the league.”

“League sources stated that although the likelihood of Thompson’s 13-year tenure with the Warriors ending grows,

there is still no formal contract offer and minimal communication between the two parties.”

According to reports, Golden State made several offers to Thompson, at least one of which was made before the

current season started, as recently as a few weeks ago.

He’s still looking into other possibilities.

Given their past, Thompson and the Warriors find themselves in a difficult predicament. Even though it sounds

ruthless, Golden State’s current focus makes sense.

If Golden State is looking to win another championship, the smartest course of action is to pursue George rather

than re-sign Thompson.
