Mavericks Emerge As Favorites To Sign Top Free Agent

Following his 11-year NBA career, Klay Thompson is expected to test the waters in free agency this offseason.

He played for the Golden State Warriors.

The Mavericks were “intent on exploring the feasibility of signing Thompson,” according to a report from Stein earlier on Friday. The Warriors and Klay Thompson have not advanced in their negotiations for a deal.

A week prior, Anthony Slater of The Athletic stated that there had been “no productive discussion between the Warriors and Thompson or his representatives”

and that the team had not extended any form of offer to Thompson.

According to Stein, the two sides are still “nowhere close,”

suggesting that the parties are still at a standstill.

Thompson was benched by the Warriors during the season,

despite averaging 17.9 points per game last season—his lowest total since 2013.

The Warriors want to surround Stephen Curry with as many elite players as they can.

Just two seasons ago, Klay Thompson shot 41.2% from beyond the arc.

He’s accurate while shooting long distance, but his delivery has been uneven.

It’s possible that Klay is no longer a good second option in the NBA.

For the Warriors, who are attempting to contend for a second title, that is insufficient.

Mavericks Seeking to Move Up One Position

Quentin Grimes was acquired by the Mavericks in exchange for veteran guard Tim Hardaway Jr. from the Detroit Pistons.

It was a payroll dump, and Quentin Grimes was a desirable addition to the transaction.

The Mavs now have some cap flexibility as a result of that trade. The Mavs are eligible for the full non-taxpayer mid-level exception since they have sufficiently removed the cap from their books.

They could re-sign Derrick Jones Jr. with that cap room. He is a priority, according to the Mavs.

They might make a greater splash in free agency with their newly acquired cap room.

This implies that they might try to entice Klay to move to the Lone Star State.

Thus, the Mavericks have become the front-runners to sign the shooting guard.
