According to the most recent rumor from NBA Insider Marc Stein,

Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks have a “strong mutual interest.

” Stein has reported on a connection between Thompson and Dallas twice in the past ten hours,

and this time it seems like there is real smoke involved.

After a season in which he averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds,

and 2.3 assists per game across 77 games, Thompson, 34, is an unrestricted free agent.

On nine shots per game, he shot 38.7% from three and 43.2% from the field.

Thompson has a lifetime three-point percentage of 41.3%.

Negotiations between Thompson and the Golden State Warriors,

with whom he has played for his entire 13-year career,

have reportedly been turbulent. Stein claims in his article that there is “nowhere close”

agreement between the two parties.

The Mavericks are currently seen as the “favorites”

to sign Thompson if they can’t figure something out.

How Dallas would go about getting Thompson on the roster is unknown.

Even after trading Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Pistons,

the Mavericks are over the threshold and can only offer potential free agents

the $12.9 million non-tax mid-level exception.

Many people have designated forward Derrick Jones Jr. as their “priority 1A and 1B” for re-signing after General Manager Nico Harrison stressed this over the summer.

However, Jones Jr. may be looking for more than the Mavericks can provide now

that he has switched management and signed with Klutch Sports. Although it is “not immediately clear” if this would be doable,

Stein noted that Dallas may be looking into ways to add Thompson while keeping Jones Jr. Dallas would need to complete a sign-and-trade with the Warriors in order to pull this off.

How can a possible deal be structured? It might be feasible to combine

Josh Green and Maxi Kleber’s salaries and sign Thompson for about $23 million a year.

Dallas would be able to keep Jones Jr. at the MLE thanks to this arrangement.

It’s uncertain, though, if the Warriors would agree to participate.

Although Thompson is 34 years old and undoubtedly nearing the conclusion of his illustrious career,

he still has a significant amount of fuel remaining in his tank.

It certainly is enticing to picture Thompson getting three-point shots from Luka Doncic.

Though the exact nature of this and how it fits into the Mavericks’ offseason plans are yet unknown,

it is a development that will be closely monitored.
