According to NBA analyst Marc Stein,

Derrick Jones Jr. has chosen Rich Paul of Klutch Sports

as his new representation as he approaches free agency.

The Dallas Mavericks are eager to sign Jones again because

he developed into a crucial three-and-d player during their playoff run.

For the 2023–24 NBA season, the eight-year NBA veteran signed a one-year, $2.7 million contract with the Mavericks.

Following a year of notable progress, he is anticipated to negotiate a pay increase in his next contract.

Derrick Jones Jr., a regular starting wing for the Mavericks, set career highs in minutes and scoring.

He shot 48.3% from the field, 34.3% from three-point range, and 71.3% from the free-throw line while averaging 8.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 23.5 minutes a game.

Dallas’ first objective this summer is to re-sign forward Derrick Jones Jr., as general manager Nico Harrison has stated, calling it “priority 1A and 1B.”

Although Jones’ motivation for changing agents before to the offseason is unknown,

it is obvious that he is looking for a hefty contract offer, whether it comes from Dallas or another team.

Recently, the Dallas Mavericks decided to trade veteran sharpshooter Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Detroit Pistons in an attempt to clear cap space for an offer to Derrick Jones Jr. Quentin Grimes is being traded to Detroit in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round selections.

Dallas’ main objective is to keep Jones Jr.; the deal will save the Mavericks about $12 million in cap space, allowing them to use the majority of the $12.9 million mid-level exception to sign Jones again when he becomes a free agency.

But Jones might choose to look into other choices, and because Paul is now his agent,

one possible location comes to mind. Paul is well-known for representing Los Angeles Lakers player LeBron James, and he has a proven track record of helping his clients sign contracts to play for the Lakers.

The decision to keep Derrick Jones Jr. instead of Tim Hardaway Jr.
The Mavericks have lost very little, if anything, on the court as a result of Hardaway Jr.’s departure.

Even though Hardaway is still a competent shooter—he finished the previous season with an average of 14.4 points per game and a 35.3% three-point shooting percentage—he was not part of Jason Kidd’s starting lineup in key postseason games.

Only the last few games of the Finals saw him get much playing time;

in Game 4, he scored fifteen points. Despite missing time last season due to injuries,

Grimes may be able to fill in for Hardaway’s absence.

Detroit still has roughly $50 million in cap space left,

which gives them flexibility in free agency.

Additionally, the Pistons want to surround their budding star with players who can consistently make baskets,

which is why they added veteran shooter Hardaway in addition to Cade Cunningham.
