Diego Simeone ‘to leave Atletico Madrid this summer’

The 52-year-old has led the Red and Whites to two La Liga crowns, two UEFA Super Cups, the Copa del Rey,

the Spanish Super Cup, two Europa League medals, and two Copa del Reys throughout his incredibly successful tenure.

Atletico Madrid lost to rival Real Madrid in the Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016, despite Simeone’s

leadership.

The Argentine’s contract at Wanda Metropolitano expires in June 2024, but Simeone has reportedly told the team he

won’t be staying on for the 2023–24 campaign, according to journalist Paco Garcia.

“In the upcoming season, Simeone will not be staying at Atleti. He informed Gil Marin that he would be departing.

After losing 1-0 to Barcelona in La Liga on Sunday, Atletico now sits in fifth place in the standings with 27 points

from their first 16 games.

The heavyweights of Madrid are now 14 points behind champions Barcelona and 11 behind Real Madrid in second

place, and they are only three points ahead of Osasuna in ninth position.

Atletico is still in the Copa del Rey, and on January 18, the team will play Levante in the competition’s last-16 round.

But because Simeone’s team finished last in their Champions League group, they will not be playing any European

football in the second half of the season.

Atletico finished fourth in the group behind Porto, Club Brugge, and Bayer Leverkusen, having only managed five

points from their six Group B games.

Simeone has managed 603 games for Atletico overall, with a record of 353 victories, 140 draws, and 110 losses.

The former midfield player managed Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo, and Catania before beginning his

managerial career with Racing Club in 2006.

Three days before their Copa del Rey matchup with Levante, Atletico will return to La Liga action on January 15

against Almeria. The month will conclude with league matches against Real Valladolid and Osasuna.
