Darren Bent thinks Man City have a midfielder who is just as good as Sergio Busquets

Pep Guardiola has trained a large number of elite players over his managerial tenure.

Over the last 15 years, the Spaniard has coached and won trophies with Barcelona,

Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, working with some of European football’s top players.

Sergio Busquets is one of those players, having played a key role in Barcelona’s success under Guardiola from 2008 to 2012.

Even after the 53-year-old left the Spanish club, Busquets remained a significant role for Barcelona until his departure last summer.

However, a pundit has identified one player now on Guardiola’s City side as being as influential for his club and country as Busquets was for Barcelona.

Darren Bent compared Rodri to Sergio Busquets.

In a recent video uploaded on the talkSPORT YouTube channel,

Darren Bent said this when asked which players stood out to him the most during the Euro 2024 group stage.

He said, “My third one, yeah, I’m heading to Rodri. I just believe that with Rodri on the team, his absence is felt strongly.

“When he is there, it’s almost as if he has taken over for Busquets. Busquets was quite influential when he did it, and now Rodri is.”

Rodri is crucial for City and Spain.

Since joining City for £62 million in 2019, the midfielder has made 257 appearances for the club in total.

Looking back on his previous Premier League season, the 28-year-old had more shot-creating actions (157),

goal-creating actions (23), successful tackles (43) and recoveries (235) in the City team.

In fact, the three league games that the Blues lost last season were those that Rodri,

whom Stefan Ortega praised as “world-class” in April, missed due to suspension.

Despite featuring in only two of Spain’s three group matches at the Euros,

the City star has made more passes into the final third of the pitch (16) than any other Spanish player in the competition.

Given all of this, it should come as no surprise to many City fans that Bent has expressed his admiration for Rodri and compared him to Busquets in terms of his impact on club and nation.
