Brendan Rodgers could’ve potentially landed a boost at Celtic this summer following news that one of his reported goalkeeper targets is now on the market as a free agent.

There has been a plethora of names linked with replacing Joe Hart between the sticks; nevertheless, with July around the corner there still seems to be no sign of his successor.

One man who has been touted with a move to Celtic this summer is Asmir Begovic, who kept 13 clean sheets in 46 appearances last term for Queens Park Rangers [Transfermarkt].

The 37-year-old was reportedly put on the Hoops’ summer shortlist as they search for a new number one. Earlier this month, he refused to be drawn on his future in an interview with talkSPORT.

Now, there could be a chance for Rodgers to land the former Bosnia and Herzegovina international for nothing.

Asmir Begovic leaves Queens Park Rangers

Per Queens Park Rangers’ official X account, Begovic has now left Loftus Road following the expiry of his contract at the West London-based club.

Former Gent stopper Paul Nardi has come in to replace him between the sticks, bringing the curtain down on a successful year at the Sky Bet Championship outfit for Begovic [BBC Sport].

Their boss, Marti Cifuentes, spoke about the veteran’s departure, stating: “Asmir did a fantastic job last season and when we knew he would not continue, it was important we had a good set of goalkeepers here.”

Undoubtedly, Begovic has enjoyed a distinguished career and carries a wealth of Premier League experience. Nevertheless, if he were a player of interest to Celtic this summer, supporters would be concerned about his age

Even taking into account the reality of short-termism, signing the former Chelsea player may be an enticing chance if younger targets prove to be unachievable. The Scottish Premiership holders have favored experienced goalkeepers over the past few years.
