Sad:The Dallas Wings are in the midst of a nightmare season
An 11-game losing streak has Dallas at rock bottom
Following the Dallas Wings’ second straight loss to the Washington Mystics, player Natasha Howard pleaded with
supporters to “keep believing” on Sunday afternoon. Monique Billings, F/C, shared the idea, pleading with people to
“stay with us.” Although Wings supporters may certainly relate to these remarks, it’s becoming more difficult to see
the bright side of things.

Dallas had now lost 11 straight games. The Wings dropped to last place in the WNBA standings after dropping both
of these back-to-back games. After 16 games of the season, it’s not where many anticipated them to be. Expectations
were increased after reaching the semifinals the previous year. With any luck, we could expand on last year’s
achievements. Feelings of optimism were strong.
However, during the offseason, WNBA Most Improved Player Satou Sabally had a shoulder injury.
In the first game of the season, Natasha Howard broke her foot. Jaelyn Brown, a rookie preseason standout,
broke her nose, had surgery, and thereafter became unwell. Maddy Siegrist had a broken finger during a season that
was quite successful. And the Wings, who were already devoid of depth and unduly dependent on their top players,
collapsed.
The wounds have been really severe. It’s unquestionably the main cause of the problems.
However, Dallas’s refusal to improve during the offseason laid the groundwork for this debacle.
Despite the fact that wage cap restrictions limited their options, General Manager Greg Bibb failed to come up with
any innovative ideas to strengthen the squad and advance it.
The Wings deteriorated while other teams added players and made moves to get better.
They cut Veronica Burton and shipped out the point guard rotation from the previous season,
trading Crystal Dangerfield for nothing. Even if those players aren’t world-beaters, overmatched novices have taken
their position. In actuality, rookies make up almost half of the Wings’ squad. That isn’t how a competitive squad is
built.
Re-signing reserve center Kalani Brown to a three-year contract and re-signing Sabally to a one-year deal in
restricted free agency were the only other offseason moves. It was disheartening and unsettling that it wasn’t a long-term commitment.
Although Brown makes a good backup, it seems strange to focus on finishing that given you already invested a
significant amount of money to select center Stephanie Soares fourth overall in the previous round.
Aside from adding training camp fliers Sevgi Uzun and Jaelyn Brown, who were selected for the squad, no other
noteworthy changes were made.
So, yeah, injuries have caused a lot of pain. Sabally is among the top ten players in the WNBA and their greatest
player. Her absence highlights the amount of rigorous lifting she accomplished last year, and her absence until
August is tremendous.
