Mavericks miss out on perfect draft night trade for Deni Avdija

Over the past few days, there have been a lot of trade speculations involving the Dallas Mavericks, most centered

around Tim Hardaway Jr.

After a dismal playoff campaign and dissatisfaction with his role, the Mavs are trying to move Hardaway Jr. Because

of his attractive expiring deal, the Mavs stand to gain by doing so.

The Washington Wizards, who were reportedly in the running for Hardaway Jr., are a tanking team that may take on

Hardaway Jr.’s expiring deal and earn some draft capital in the process.

The Mavs got Daniel Gafford in a blockbuster trade that the Wizards and Mavs executed around the trade deadline

last year. They also had a prime chance to pull off a blockbuster trade involving Deni Avdija on draft night,

but the Wizards shipped him elsewhere.

Malcolm Brogdon and draft capital were sent to the Portland Trail Blazers by the Wizards in exchange for Avdija,

so the Mavs were unable to get their third future scorer. The Mavs expressed interest in Avdija during the previous

year’s trade deadline, and with the Wizards surfacing as a potential contender for Hardaway Jr., this would have

been the ideal opportunity for the Mavs to acquire him.

Avdija averaged 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 0.8 steals a game while shooting 37.4 percent from three-

point range and 50.6 percent from the field during the previous campaign for Washington. Growing into a capable

point forward, Avdija would have been a great addition to Dallas’ lineup with Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic.

Although it doesn’t appear like Dallas is completely out of the running for Avdija, it has seemed less likely given that

he is currently with the Blazers. The Mavs have expressed interest in acquiring Jerami Grant from the Blazers,

but if Hardaway Jr. is part of the transaction, it may be unlikely that these two teams will trade for each other.

Though Avdija was undoubtedly a dream trade target for Mavs supporters, Dallas doesn’t have first-round picks to

give up for just anybody, as their future may depend on their final two tradable firsts.

Avdija hadn’t been linked to Dallas in trade rumors since the previous campaign, but he would have been a fantastic match.
