We are frequently told that football is a team sport. And why is that told to us? since it is undeniably true!

Furthermore, while goal scorers will always command attention, a new generation of statisticians

has brought attention to what the finest scouts and managers have long understood: goal makers and

goal takers are equally valuable.

The audience can now put numbers to the men behind the scorers as assist columns have joined the same

performance charts as appearances and goals, along with the unwelcome yellow and red card counts.

For hoops fans this season, Matt O’Riley’s name stands out the most. The Danish international is not only at the top

of the statistics this season with 18 assists, but he also has a foot in both columns after

finishing tied with Kyogo for 19 goals in 2023–2024.

With 38 goals between them, one can assume that Kyogo scored some of his 18 assists from O’Riley,

and the midfielder is happy with his partnership with the Japanese striker.

“It’s very good, both on and off the pitch. I find him really easy to play with because of his great movement,

” he said in the most recent issue of the Celtic View.

“We’ve had a great relationship from my first season here until now, and I think that he trusts that

I’ll always look to play in the ball because I try to look forward as much as possible.”

“I don’t know how many, but I’m sure he’s gotten a lot of my assists.”

There may be too many goals and assists for him to pick a favorite this season, but one particular event has

fostered a sense of pleasure in his assists.

“I like the ones from the Champions League just because every assist was probably one of my

best assists overall,” he remarked.

“Having all of your high-level assists in the same campaign is just really neat. Additionally,

you can demonstrate your ability to perform at a high level when you play at that level.

In terms of goals, it’s a similar dilemma as he’s scored a couple worldies this season,

but his finest came from hitting a double in the game that decided the title at Kilmarnock.

“That was cool—it was a nice way to wrap up the league,” he recalls. That was our best performance to far,

and it’s not really that simple to pull off on an astro as well. That was a really enjoyable evening, and in

terms of the league, that was the night where everything kind of clicked for me.

“Because we all had a lot of ups and downs during the lengthy season, and it was really nice to cross the

finish line in that way.”
