When he lost against Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s Wimbledon final, Novak Djokovic was heckled, and John McEnroe was upset with the audience.

John McEnroe has criticized the Wimbledon Center Court audience for how they treated Novak Djokovic during the championship match last year.

The legendary player of tennis believed that the heckling of Djokovic by the crowd, during their exciting five-set encounter against Carlos Alcaraz, went too far.

During the championship match, Djokovic was jeered by the audience, which seemed to favor the young Spanish player Alcaraz.

After the match, Djokovic was penalized for breaking the net post, even though he had responded to the audience by blowing kisses and cupping his ears.

Nonetheless, McEnroe was taken aback by the Wimbledon audience’s lack of respect for seven-time winner Djokovic in contrast to fellow greats Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

“Novak has not only equalled them (Federer and Nadal) but surpassed them in overall achievements, which seemed impossible,” McEnroe told Metro. “Rafa and Roger are two guys who are absolute class acts.

All around the world, they are adored and revered. Novak is treated unfairly. He is the antagonist, the villain. In a way, I suppose you need a nice person and a nasty guy. Rivals like that might be beneficial to the sport.”

Even if Federer and Nadal were unable to complete a non-calendar-year Grand Slam despite having won 24 major titles.

Djokovic was prevented from becoming just the second men’s player in the history of the open era to win a Grand Slam, after Rod Laver in 1969, with his loss against Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

However, the 37-year-old is not being considered for this summer’s Wimbledon title. As the favorites, however, are rising stars Jannik Sinner, who just became the world number one, and Alcaraz, who won the French Open this month.

But it seems foolish to undervalue Djokovic. The Serbian is pursuing an eighth Wimbledon victory to match Roger Federer’s record, and McEnroe has praised Djokovic’s tenacity.

McEnroe went on, “I think it’s been unfair, honestly, because he is great for the game.” Outside of the court as well.

Making lemonade out of lemons is something he’s done quite well; I wasn’t quite as good at it.”You know, he somehow utilizes people’s desire to see the underdog or someone else triumph as motivation to support him. You shouldn’t undervalue such a fantastic quality.”

The esteemed grass-court competition begins on July 1st, and Djokovic is raring to go after losing to Australian Open champion Sinner in the semifinals and retiring from the French Open in the quarterfinals due to a knee injury. Djokovic would win Wimbledon at the age of 37, making history.
