Dallas Mavericks Quiet On First Day of NBA Draft, Pick 58th Overall On Day Two

Nico Harrison and the Mavs stood pat in the first round of the NBA Draft

Despite rumors of potential trades, the Dallas Mavericks did not have a first-round pick when the NBA Draft of 2024

began. They did not make a single move on Wednesday night and instead exited the first round standing pat.

They now possess the 58th overall pick, which is the final pick of the draft because several clubs had picks taken

away from them because of tampering infractions.

The NBA separated the two rounds into different days in order to attract more attention to the NBA Draft.

As a result, the second round will begin on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. CST.

Although the Mavs weren’t expected to trade into the first round, it was still possible to get rid of Tim Hardaway Jr.

or make a big move to acquire Jerami Grant of Portland or Cameron Johnson of Brooklyn. Portland has already

completed one significant trade—purchasing Deni Avdija from Washington—and may soon make more.

In the event that they add the 58th overall pick to Hardaway’s deal and maybe move up to Detroit’s 53rd pick,

the trade is more likely to occur on Thursday.

Throughout his time as general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, Nico Harrison has not shied away from making

draft-day transactions. He traded down in his first round to choose Jaden Hardy and made several moves to get

Dereck Lively II and Olivier-Maxence Prosper last year.

With the final pick in what is thought to be a mediocre draft class, it’s unlikely that they locate a guy who can make

an impact, but if they can use it to move off a payroll, that’s good enough.
