Sunderland goalkeeper explains reasons behind summer transfer and why he chose League One club
They completed their third transfer deal of the summer window on Tuesday
Nathan Bishop, who hopes to play regular senior games in the upcoming season,
believes joining Wycombe Wanderers was the right decision for him.
Two years after he nearly moved, Bishop has signed a season-long loan with the League One team.
The 24-year-old was about to sign a contract when Manchester United decided against allowing it to happen.
A year later, Bishop signed with Sunderland, and following his two competitive appearances in the previous campaign,
all sides agreed that it would be best for him to go on loan.
The goalie claims he is familiar with the team and that his desire to join was sparked in large part by their ambition after a recent takeover.
“This new training ground is enormous, with joyful smiles all around.
To be honest, I’m just happy to be here and am quite pleased about it.
Since I live right next door, I make the pleasant little commute to training every day.
We were unfortunate not to complete that when I came very close to joining here two years ago.
After seeing Sunderland, I returned here magically. Hearing about the interest thrilled me,
especially since I’m a local boy and know the club’s new orientation under the new ownership.
Bishop’s close relationship with Wycombe’s head of goalkeeping, which the team’s manager, Matt Bloomfield,
stated was essential to the transfer: “We are thrilled to have Nathan join us for the 2024–2025 season. Lee Harrison,
our head of goalkeeping, and I have admired him for a long time.”
“We were able to attract Nathan to the club in large part because Lee maintained contact with him after working with him at Southend.
Having played with some of the best keepers in the league for the past few years at
Sunderland and Manchester United, he has already made nearly 100 appearances for the senior team.
He has a great chance to fight for the first team here.
