Following last season’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League, Newcastle United are planning to bring in defensive reinforcements to help them return to the top four next year.

Newcastle use summer to bolster defence

For much of last season, Newcastle failed to establish a reliable back four, owing primarily to a succession of unfortunate injuries. To avoid this issue in the upcoming season, the Magpies have looked at a variety of defensive players.

Lloyd Kelly is already making the shift to St James’ Park. The defender is poised to officially join Newcastle on July 1st, having become a free agent after his contract with Bournemouth expired.

The Serie A giants are reportedly unwilling to sell the Italian centre back, but a deal in excess of £25 million could persuade them due to Juventus’ persistent financial problems.

Gatti played 32 games for Juventus, which won the Champions League by placing third in Serie A. The central defense also scored four times during the season, which is a remarkable performance for a player in his position.
