The Sunderland-linked winger has signed with Championship rivals Portsmouth…

Josh Murphy, an attacker linked to Sunderland, has joined Portsmouth, a rival team in the Championship.

With a club option for a further year, the 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract.

The winger was linked to several teams this summer, including Sunderland,

after winning promotion from League One with Oxford United the previous season.

“Josh brings a wealth of Premier League and Championship experience for starters,” Blues manager John Mousinho stated.

He was among the League One’s best players in the second part of the previous campaign,

which culminated with his brace at Wembley to overtake Oxford.

“He’s a dynamic winger with a strong arsenal of assists and goals.” Additionally, there is pure pace on both flanks.

Josh’s style of play has the ability to electrify the crowd, so we’re thrilled to close the deal.

In 2018, Murphy signed a four-year contract with Premier League team Cardiff City for an unknown sum,

rumoured to be over £11 million. Throughout his career, the forward has also played for Preston North End,

Wigan Athletic, MK Dons, and Norwich City.

Murphy was fired by Oxford United, the club announced.

Under Des Buckingham’s leadership, the attacker scored two goals in the play-off final at Wembley against Bolton Wanderers,

which helped propel Oxford United to promotion the previous season.

Ed Waldron, head of recruitment at Oxford, stated: “We wanted Josh to stay at the club,

but he leaves having played a significant part in our promotion success.

Josh and I have been negotiating a contract since the beginning of the year.

We made every effort to keep him at Oxford United after the club made a tremendous offer.

Josh made the decision to move on and go somewhere else, and we accept that.

“The club will now concentrate on other goals as we continue to build a competitive squad for the upcoming Championship campaign.

We have a very clear recruitment strategy in place.”

“Oxford United would like to thank Josh for his contributions to the club,” the statement said.
