When the Foxes played Aston Villa 4-0 on March 9 of last year, they were leading the Premier League by eight points, ahead of Manchester United in the hunt for a top-four spot.

It was the last Premier League game before the Covid epidemic ended the season,

giving Rodgers and his team time to reflect and strategize how to go through the remaining nine games to secure a Champions League spot.

However, Leicester’s hopes of placing in the top four were dashed when Project Restart got underway in the summer,

winning just two of their final nine games.

There was a startling decline in output and proficiency.

A 4-1 loss to relegated Bournemouth, a 3-0 loss at Tottenham, and, most importantly,

a victory by Manchester United at the King Power Stadium on the last day of the season to secure fourth place were among those setbacks.

However, issues were already approaching as the forced pause approached.

Leicester had only won two of their previous eight league games and had only picked up two points from their previous four games before to their victory over Villa.

Additionally, they had lost their Carabao Cup semifinal match against Aston Villa at the end of January 2020,

and it was believed that the loss had affected team morale going into the final stretch.

Following the humiliating loss at Bournemouth, an angry Rodgers declared that his team was

“not good enough to get too comfortable” and that they should “worry about playing well” instead than focusing on their Champions League aspirations.

He continued during the rough patch, saying, “Since we returned (after Project Restart),

we have been playing games for 45 minutes.
